Cement Industry Employees Union (CIEU)

Cement Industry Employees Union (CIEU) is an industrial union that organizes workers in the cement sector in Malaysia. The union’s headquarter is located in Sungai Siput, Perak.

Currently, CIEU is fighting for the reinstatement of 62 cement workers, who were retrenched by YTL Cement Berhad’s plant on 15 May 2020 in Rawang, Selangor state.

CIEU and Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) have criticized the YTL Cement for terminating the workers during the Covid-19 pandemic and the Movement Control Period.

According to the union, when YTL Cement bought over the plant in 2019, the company promised the workers that the modernization plan in the next three years would not affect the well-being of workers.

The 62 workers were shocked when the company notified them about the termination. The company said they could either accept a job transfer to YTL Cement’s other plants or leave the company. The company only negotiated with the worksite committee, not the national body CIEU.

CIEU is affiliated with MTUC and Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI). The latter launched a global petition campaign to call for reinstatement of the 62 workers.

If you are a cement worker, please don’t hesitate to contact and join CIEU now!
