Union History
Food Industry Employees’ Union (FIEU / KPPPM) was established by Osman Din in 1970, a period that is much difficult to form trade unions because it was immediately after the May 13 conflict.
In 1970, labour activists from FIEU successfully organised 300 workers from three factories – Premier Milk (M) Sdn. Bhd. (Now known as F & N Dairies Mfg Sdn. Bhd.), Food Specialities Sdn. Bhd. (Nestle Mfg. (M) Sdn. Bhd.) and Federal Flour Mill Bhd (FFM).
The constitution of FIEU stipulates that the union can represent workers employed in companies producing food, beverage, oil palm, sugar and other similar products.
Struggles and Milestones
FIEU was formed to fight for the welfare and better working conditions of workers in food and beverage industry.
Realising workers’ rights is not an easy task, FIEU has been defending workers’ interests at all organised workplace. One of the key battles with employer was industrial dispute with a pineapple company in 1990s.
FIEU ordered a picket to put pressure on the employer when the collective bargaining process had become an impasse. Food workers demanded the employer to increase wages as a mean to improve their living standard.
Current Situation
Today, as many as 70 factories were organised by FIEU with 55 collective agreements. The union has 8,167 members including 34 per cent women workers.
After 50 years of formation, FIEU has purchased two properties as its own office in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru.
Locally, FIEU is affiliated with Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC); Globally, FIEU is affiliated with the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers’ Associations (IUF).
