LLRC held solidarity event in conjunction with International Workers’ Memorial Day

(28 April 2022) Today, the Labour Law Reform Coalition held a solidarity event in conjunction with International Workers’ Memorial Day, a date where the workers killed, injured or made unwell by work are remembered.

The event introduced preliminary findings from the LLRC’s Occupational Health and Safety Report 2022, as well as speeches and testimonies from migrant workers and labour activists.

Malaysia is home to several million migrant workers due to its resources and strategic location. However, it is also a key destination and transit nation for trafficking and people smuggling.

In testimonies, migrant workers related stories of employer abuse and lack of access to healthcare.

The event closed with a candlelit moment of silence and solidarity for fallen workers. The LLRC adjures Malaysians to not only mourn and remember the lives of the migrant workers lost, but also strive to fight for those who are still forced to work in inhumane conditions.
