Metal Industry Employees’ Union (MIEU)

Metal Industry Employees’ Union (MIEU) was established on 10 February 1963 by a group of metal workers including Govindasamy Rajasekaran.

Today, MIEU represents more than ten thousand workers in the metal industry. Workers in metal manufacturing factories such as metal fabrication, metal galvanising, copper production, stamping production, steel and aluminium mills can join MIEU.

MIEU has been fighting for the rights of metal workers in the past few decades. It will not hesitate to take industrial actions to protect the well-being of its members.

Since 2016, the union staged multiple pickets at Megasteel Sdn Bhd in Banting to protest the 50% wage cut and indefinite layoff for more than hundred members

. It also submitted a memorandum appealing to Megasteel’s parent company Lion Group to withdraw the decision. The Malaysian government was criticised for failing to protect the local steel companies by imposing anti-dumping measures on China steel.

MIEU has also condemned union busting at German multinational company Elektrisola Malaysia. The company classified 90 percent of its production workers as confidential workers, claiming that MIEU was not competent to represent the workers.

MIEU has made significant contributions to the national labour centre and regional union bodies. G. Rajasekaran was 8-term Secretary-General of Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) from 1993 to 2010.

He was also the President of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions Asia and Pacific Regional Organisation (ICFTU APRO) from 2005 to 2007, and the President of International Trade Union Confederation Asia Pacific (ITUC-AP) from 2007 to 2015.
