Sabah Medical Services Union (SMSU)

Sabah Medical Services Union was established by a group of medical assistants on 13 April 1966 in Sabah.

SMSU is a public sector union, which accepts medical assistants based in Sabah as members. The objective is to protect the rights of medical assistants at hospitals, clinics, and other places in Sabah.

SMSU often organises activities for its members, for example occupational safety and health training, engagement sessions with members, solidarity events and labour day seminars.

Trade union has given an important voice to medical assistants in Sabah.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, SMSU urged the Ministry of Health to pay attention to the welfare of medical assistants, who had been working 12-hour shift tirelessly throughout the period. Issues raised by SMSU include :

  • Shortage of manpower caused issues such as stresses, mental health and burnt out.
  • Special allowance and overtime pay should be given to workers as soon as possible
  • Unused and accumulated annual leave might be forfeited

Bro. Ajulahin Japin is the SMSU President, meanwhile Bro. Laurence Vun is the Executive Secretary.

At the national level, SMSU is affiliated with the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs). At the international level, SMSU is affiliated with the Public Services International (PSI).
