[Quick glance is series short write-ups on Malaysian unions based on online available information ]
In 1990s, a group of timber workers at Sabah Forest Industries (SFI) established Sabah Forest Industries Employees Union (SFIEU). The union submitted a claim for recognition in 2003 but failed.
After that, the timber workers formed Sabah Timber Industry Employees Union (STIEU) and submitted two claims for recognition in 2010 and 2014 respectively. Despite the Ministry of Human Resources ordered a secret ballot to be held, the company filed multiple judicial reviews to obstruct the process.
Eventually, STIEU won the legal battle at the Federal Court in October 2017. Next year, the union won the secret ballot at SFI with 72.88% of workers’ support.
Today, STIEU is still actively defending workers’ rights during the Covid-19 pandemic. It negotiates collective agreements with employers, bargains for better wages and working conditions in timber industries.
STIEU is affiliated with Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI).
