Since the Labour Solidarity and Learning Resources Association (LLRC, formerly known as the Labour Law Reform Coalition) organised its first consultation meeting on labour law reforms in 2018, the coalition has received numerous complaints from trade unionists regarding issues in organising workers in Malaysia.

There remains a lack of proper documentation of cases of anti-union discrimination and violation of workers’ rights in Malaysia. Systematic written analysis on the organising challenges and proposals for change are largely unavailable.

To address this weakness, the LLRC conducted several interviews with trade union leaders from both East and West Malaysia as well as migrant worker organisers with the goal of documenting these violations and providing a critical analysis along with recommendations for overcoming these organising challenges.

This report features a snapshot of problems in the organising process and claim for recognition procedure including the secret ballot exercise. More research should be done on violation of workers’ rights in Malaysia.
