University of Malaya General Staff Union (UMGSU)

The formation of the University of Malaya General Staff Union (UMGSU) was initiated by RC Daniel in 1963, who subsequently was the First President of UMGSU. The initial membership, including UM hospital staffs, was around 300-500.

The union’s mission is to fight for higher wages for its members and prevent arbitrary dismissal of workers. It is the only union that protects the interests of general staffs in the University of Malaya, one of the best higher education institutions in Malaysia.

In 1960-70s, the leaders of UMGSU launched various donation drives to construct the union’s building in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Today, union members enjoyed good facilities because of the far-sighted pioneers.

Until today, the union remains very active. Recent years, it organized series webinars during the Covid-19 pandemic, gathering for retirees, anti-sexual harassment workshop, flood missions and the others.

Currently, UMGSU is led by Brother Mazmir Mohd Amin. The union formed several committees to assist the executive committee. For example, industrial relations committee, education committee, building management sub-committee, youth committee, women committee and others.

UMGSU is affiliated with Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), Congress of Union of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS) and Public Services International (PSI).
